BREAKING: The WNBA organizers have officially announced a 3-game suspension and a $50,000 fine for the dirty actions committed by two Connecticut Sun players against Caitlin Clark in a violent manner. Caitlin Clark was poked in the eye by Jacy Sheldon and shoved by Marina Mabrey. AB

In a stunning development that’s rocking the world of professional women’s basketball, the WNBA has officially handed down disciplinary action against two Connecticut Sun players for what league officials are calling “violent and unsportsmanlike conduct” toward Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.

According to an official statement released this morning, Jacy Sheldon and Marina Mabrey have both been suspended for three games and fined $50,000 each following an internal review of separate incidents during the Fever’s most recent matchup against the Sun. The highly anticipated game turned physical fast—culminating in a sequence that saw Clark poked in the eye by Sheldon and forcefully shoved to the floor by Mabrey.

The penalties come after days of mounting public pressure, intense debate on sports shows, and viral video clips of the events, which many fans described as “targeted,” “reckless,” and “potentially career-threatening.”

The Incident: Tensions Boil Over

The first flashpoint came early in the second quarter. After a contested rebound, Caitlin Clark was seen driving down the baseline when Jacy Sheldon reached across her face during a loose-ball scuffle and appeared to poke her in the eye. Clark stumbled back and immediately grabbed her face in pain but remained in the game after receiving medical attention.

Later, with just three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Marina Mabrey appeared to lose her cool after Clark drained a long three-pointer. On the next possession, Mabrey aggressively shoved Clark to the hardwood, sending the 22-year-old rookie sliding several feet across the court. The referees reviewed the incident but initially issued only a common foul.

But the league office clearly saw things differently.

“After further video analysis and internal review, we have determined that the actions of both Jacy Sheldon and Marina Mabrey were in violation of WNBA conduct and player safety standards,” the league said in its official statement. “The safety of our athletes is a top priority, and this type of physical aggression will not be tolerated.”

Clark Responds with Class

Despite the physicality and the controversy swirling around the game, Caitlin Clark maintained her composure throughout. When asked about the incidents during the post-game press conference, she gave a characteristically mature response.

“Basketball is a physical game. I’m just focused on helping my team win,” she said. “Things happen out there, but I trust the league to handle it the right way.”

Clark finished the game with 24 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds—helping the Fever to a hard-fought 83–79 victory.

Fans and Analysts React: “Long Overdue”

The WNBA’s decision has ignited a firestorm of reactions across sports media and social platforms.

“It’s about time,” said ESPN analyst Monica McNutt. “Caitlin Clark has taken a lot of hard hits this season. You can be physical without being dirty.”

Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd weighed in as well:

“You don’t need to be a Caitlin Clark fan to admit that this was excessive. A poke to the eye? A straight shove to the floor? That’s not basketball. That’s intimidation.”

Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) in droves to express relief that the league was finally addressing what many have called an ongoing pattern of aggressive targeting against Clark.

“Three-game suspension isn’t enough. This has been building for weeks. Players need to be held accountable,” one user tweeted.

“Caitlin Clark is elevating the game and bringing in millions of new fans. The league must protect her,” another added.

Connecticut Sun Issues Statement

The Connecticut Sun organization responded shortly after the league’s announcement, issuing a brief but pointed statement.

“We respect the league’s decision and accept the penalties imposed. However, we stand behind our players and believe that the intensity of the game should never be mistaken for malicious intent.”

The team did not confirm whether Sheldon or Mabrey will appeal the suspensions.

What This Means for the WNBA

This ruling marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions by the WNBA in recent years and underscores the spotlight that now follows every move involving Caitlin Clark. The 2024 No. 1 draft pick has drawn record viewership and ticket sales, making her one of the league’s most valuable assets.

But with that attention comes increased scrutiny—and physical targeting on the court.

“It’s not just about Clark,” said former WNBA star Sue Bird. “It’s about setting a tone. This is the league saying, ‘We protect our talent. Period.’”

Looking Ahead

Both Sheldon and Mabrey will begin serving their suspensions immediately, sidelining them for key matchups as the Connecticut Sun battles for playoff positioning. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever continue their impressive rookie campaign with momentum—and now, a bit more protection from the league.

Whether this changes how other teams defend Clark remains to be seen. But for now, the WNBA has sent a clear message:

Play hard. But play clean.
