Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur and His Family Are Mourning the Loss of His 9-Year-Old Cousin, Ella LaFleur, Who Died During Devastating Floods at a Texas Summer Camp Over the Weekend.NO.1

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and his family are in mourning after the tragic loss of his 9-year-old cousin, Ella LaFleur, who was among the victims of the devastating flash floods that swept across central Texas during the July 4th holiday weekend. Ella was attending a weeklong summer camp in the Texas Hill Country when torrential rains caused rivers to overflow, triggering one of the deadliest natural disasters the region has seen in years.

Officials have confirmed that at least 82 people have died as a result of the flooding, including 28 children. The flooding struck with little warning after a powerful storm system dropped more than 15 inches of rain over the course of two days. Among the hardest-hit areas was the Blanco River valley, where Ella was staying at Willow Creek Nature Camp, a well-known retreat for kids from across the country.
Ella was described by family members as bright, imaginative, and full of joy. She loved dancing, animals, and anything to do with the outdoors. Her dream was to one day become a wildlife conservationist. Those who knew her say she had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever she went and often left little handwritten notes of encouragement for classmates and family members.
Matt LaFleur, widely respected for his calm demeanor and strategic mind on the football field, shared a deeply emotional statement on Sunday night through the Packers’ official social media channels:

“Our hearts are broken. Ella was a beautiful soul – joyful, kind, and curioυς about the world. She brought light to everyone who knew her. My family is devastated by this unimaginable loss. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support. Right now, we ask for privacy as we grieve and remember our sweet Ella.”
The NFL community has rallied around LaFleur and his family. Coaches, players, and fans alike have offered condolences and shared messages of support. Packers quarterback Jordan Love called Ella’s passing “a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life is” and added that “the entire team stands behind Coach LaFleur and his family.” Other figures from across the league, including head coaches Sean McVay, Andy Reid, and Mike Tomlin, reached out privately and publicly to express their support.

At Willow Creek Nature Camp, staff and volunteers have been left reeling. In a press briefing Monday, camp director Carla Jennings held back tears as she recounted the desperate efforts to evacuate the children оnсе the floodwaters began rising.
“We never imagined anything like this,” she said. “We had emergency protocols. We did our drills. But the speed and violence of the flood overwhelmed everything. Ella was a bright light at camp, always laughing, always curioυς. Her absence will be deeply felt.”
According to meteorologists, the flood was worsened by a rare combination of stalled weather systems and record-breaking rainfall, which caused several rivers to rise by more than 10 feet in under six hours. The region had already been saturated by previous storms, leaving the soil unable to absorb more water.

Climate experts are pointing to this tragedy as another example of the increasing risks posed by extreme weather events, particularly in areas with outdated infrastructure or limited emergency response systems. Discussions have already begun among Texas state officials about improvements to weather alert systems and better evacuation planning for rural camps and outdoor education centers.
In Green Bay, the loss has resonated far beyond the football field. Fans and members of the community have left flowers, notes, and stuffed animals outside Lambeau Field in tribute to Ella. The Packers organization αππουnced plans to honor her memory during the team’s first home game of the season, with a special moment of silence and charitable donations made in her name to children’s nature education programs.
The LaFleur family has also indicated that they plan to launch the Ella LaFleur Foundation, a попрrofit dedicated to promoting outdoor education and environmental awareness for children, as well as improving disaster preparedness at camps and schools. The foundation, which is still in its early planning stages, is expected to partner with environmental groups and youth organizations across the country.

A private funeral for Ella will be held later this week in Michigan, where mапу members of the LaFleur family live. The service is expected to be attended by close family and friends, with a larger public memorial planned for late July.
In the meantime, Coach LaFleur has taken a temporary leave from his duties with the Packers to be with his family. Team executives and assistant coaches are fully supporting the decision, emphasizing that family comes first.
“This loss is beyond football,” said Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst. “Matt is not just a leader on the field – he’s a husband, a father, a cousin. We’re holding him and his family in our hearts.”
As the LaFleur family navigates this painful time, the memory of Ella her laughter, her curiosity, her love for nature lives on. In the face of tragedy, they are choosing to honor her not just in grief, but in purpose: by creating a legacy that will help protect and inspire children for years to come.
