Christian McCaffrey, 49ers Agree to $38M Extension: Star Running Back Remains NFL’s Highest-Paid
The San Francisco 49ers have locked down the heart of their offense for years to come, signing All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey to a two-year, $38 million contract extension that keeps him in the Bay Area through the 2027 season. The deal includes $24 million guaranteed and cements McCaffrey’s status as the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
McCaffrey, 28, was already under contract through 2025 following his 2022 trade from the Carolina Panthers. The new extension tacks on two additional years and restructures parts of his previous deal, offering both player security and team flexibility as the 49ers manage an increasingly top-heavy salary cap structure.
The extension arrives on the heels of one of McCaffrey’s most dominant seasons. In 2023, he led the league in rushing yards (1,459), scrimmage yards (2,023), and total touchdowns (21), earning him the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award and a unanimous First-Team All-Pro selection. His all-purpose brilliance fueled San Francisco’s high-powered offense and helped propel the team to a 13-4 regular season record and a deep playoff run.
“This was an easy decision,” said McCaffrey in a statement. “The 49ers have embraced me since day one, and I couldn’t be more excited to stay here and continue building something special with my teammates. This is where I want to finish my career.”
A Historic Deal for a Historic Talent
The two-year extension carries an average annual value of $19 million, making McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in NFL history, ahead of previous benchmark deals like Alvin Kamara’s $15 million per year and Derrick Henry’s $12.5 million.
The guaranteed money—$24 million—also ranks among the highest ever awarded to a running back, signaling San Francisco’s belief in McCaffrey’s long-term value despite the position’s typically short shelf life.
“Christian is one of the most complete and dynamic offensive players in the NFL,” said 49ers General Manager John Lynch. “His work ethic, intelligence, and leadership elevate not only our offense but the entire locker room. We’re thrilled to have him as a foundational piece moving forward.”
While the deal is eye-popping, it also helps the 49ers manage their cap more effectively. By converting portions of his 2024 and 2025 base salaries into bonuses, the team is expected to free up additional cap space this season—space that could be used toward extensions for other key players like wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk or edge rusher Nick Bosa.
A Key Piece of a Championship Puzzle
Since his arrival in San Francisco in October 2022, McCaffrey has been a transformative force. In just 26 regular-season games with the 49ers, he has totaled 2,701 yards from scrimmage and 27 touchdowns. His versatility as a runner, receiver, and even passer in Kyle Shanahan’s scheme has allowed the 49ers to deploy one of the most unpredictable and explosive offenses in the NFL.
Teammates have lauded McCaffrey not just for his on-field production, but for the example he sets in the weight room and the film room.
“He sets the standard,” said 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. “Every rep in practice, every play in the game—he’s all-in. There’s no one I’d rather line up beside in the backfield.”
McCaffrey’s durability, long a concern during his Carolina days, has improved in San Francisco. He has played in 33 of a possible 34 games (including playoffs) since joining the team. His performance in the postseason—including a 90-yard, two-touchdown outing in the NFC Championship Game—further solidified his reputation as a big-game player.
What’s Next for the 49ers?
With McCaffrey secured through 2027, the 49ers can now turn their attention to other pressing contract situations. Star wideout Brandon Aiyuk remains a potential holdout candidate as he seeks a long-term deal, while negotiations with defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and Arik Armstead loom.
Still, ensuring the presence of their most important offensive weapon is a significant victory for a team that remains in Super Bowl contention. For McCaffrey, it represents stability and trust—elements that were harder to come by during his final years in Carolina.

With the deal finalized ahead of training camp, both McCaffrey and the 49ers can now focus on the task at hand: chasing a sixth Lombardi Trophy.
