The Green Bay Packers officially have a new running back. The team announced the addition of running back Israel Abanikanda, who was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.
Abanikanda, a fifth-round pick of the New York Jets in the 2023 NFL draft, was waived by the 49ers on Thursday. He was awarded to the Packers off waivers on Friday and officially signed to the Packers roster on Saturday, meaning he passed a physical and is now a part of the team’s 90-man roster.
Abanikanda carried 22 times for 70 yards and caught seven passes for 43 yards across six games with the Jets as a rookie. He was inactive for the first 12 games of the 2024 season, waived by the Jets in early December and claimed by the 49ers.
The 143rd overall pick in 2023, Abanikanda had a dominant final season at Pitt, rushing for 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns while also setting school records for rushing yards (320) and touchdowns (6) in a single game. He was named a third-team All-American and first-team All-ACC.
Over two preseasons with the Jets, Abanikanda rushed 46 times for 243 yards and three touchdowns and forced 18 missed tackles, per PFF. He also caught seven passes for 51 yards.
Abanikanda joins a running back room in Green Bay featuring Josh Jacobs, MarShawn Lloyd, Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks. Rookie Amar Johnson is currently on the PUP list with a hamstring injury.
Abanikanda doesn’t turn 23 years old until October. He will wear No. 23 with the Packers.
