SHOCKWAVES AT THE FBI: TOP FBI LEADER SUDDENLY QUITS DAYS BEFORE EPSTEIN FILES DROP – phanh

Dan Bongino, F.B.I. Deputy Director, to Step Down Amid Tensions Over Epstein Files

WASHINGTON — Dan Bongino, the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a former conservative podcaster whose appointment broke with decades of tradition, announced on Wednesday that he would leave his post in January, ending a turbulent nine-month tenure marked by internal clashes, public recriminations and mounting pressure over the handling of investigative files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr. Bongino, 51, posted a brief statement on social media thanking President Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi and F.B.I. Director Kash Patel for the “opportunity to serve with purpose.” He did not specify an exact departure date or elaborate on his reasons, but his exit comes just days before a congressionally mandated deadline for the Justice Department to release a vast trove of documents from its Epstein investigations, set for Friday, Dec. 19.

The timing has fueled speculation among some conservatives that Mr. Bongino’s departure is linked to lingering frustrations within the administration over the Epstein case, which has long been a flashpoint for conspiracy theories. Before joining the government, Mr. Bongino frequently promoted the notion on his popular podcast that Mr. Epstein had been murdered in jail to silence him, rather than dying by suicide as official investigations concluded. He also suggested the existence of a hidden “client list” implicating powerful figures.

Once in office, however, Mr. Bongino and other Trump appointees confronted the realities of prior probes, which found no evidence of foul play in Mr. Epstein’s 2019 death or a blackmail ledger of prominent names. In July, after the Justice Department and F.B.I. issued a joint memo declaring the review exhaustive and closing further disclosures, Mr. Bongino clashed sharply with Ms. Bondi. According to officials familiar with the matter, the dispute escalated into a heated White House confrontation where Ms. Bondi accused him of leaking damaging stories to right-wing media outlets.

That episode nearly prompted Mr. Bongino to resign at the time, sources said, and contributed to an unusual arrangement in August when Andrew Bailey, then Missouri’s attorney general, was appointed as a co-deputy director — a move widely seen as diluting Mr. Bongino’s authority. Mr. Bailey has since assumed many day-to-day responsibilities.

President Trump, speaking to reporters earlier Wednesday, praised Mr. Bongino’s performance but suggested his departure was voluntary. “Dan did a great job,” Mr. Trump said. “I think he wants to go back to his show.” The comment alluded to Mr. Bongino’s lucrative pre-government career hosting “The Dan Bongino Show,” a top-rated conservative podcast on platforms like Rumble.

Mr. Bongino’s tenure was anything but conventional. Appointed in February alongside Mr. Patel — another Trump loyalist with no prior F.B.I. experience — he was the first deputy director in modern history without a background as a career agent. The selection drew immediate criticism from the F.B.I. Agents Association and former bureau officials, who warned it politicized a role traditionally insulated from partisan influences.

Inside the bureau, Mr. Bongino’s style — marked by frequent social media posts, a combative demeanor and willingness to revisit cold cases prized by the president’s base — alienated some veteran agents. Yet he claimed credit for breakthroughs, including the recent arrest of a suspect in the placement of pipe bombs near Democratic and Republican headquarters on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Still, the Epstein matter proved the most intractable. Trump administration officials had initially fueled expectations of revelations, diverting agents to re-examine files and videos. When those efforts yielded no new charges or explosive disclosures, backlash from the MAGA grassroots intensified. Far-right commentators accused Ms. Bondi of a cover-up, while sparing Mr. Trump himself.

As the Dec. 19 deadline approaches under the Epstein Files Transparency Act — bipartisan legislation signed by Mr. Trump last month — the Justice Department is preparing to release hundreds of gigabytes of material, including flight logs, financial records and forensic reports. Officials have signaled heavy redactions to protect victims and ongoing sensitivities, potentially disappointing those anticipating unvarnished bombshells.

Mr. Bongino’s exit removes one of the administration’s most vocal internal advocates for aggressive pursuit of Epstein-related theories. Director Patel praised him on social media as “the best partner” in restoring the bureau, while Ms. Bondi echoed gratitude for his service.

For rank-and-file agents, the departure may signal a stabilization after months of upheaval, including mass reassignments and firings under Mr. Trump’s directives. But it also underscores the challenges of reconciling campaign rhetoric rooted in skepticism of institutions with the constraints of governing them.

Mr. Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and New York City police officer, has not announced future plans, though a return to media appears likely. His resignation is among the highest-profile of the young Trump term, highlighting the persistent tensions between loyalty, expectation and institutional reality.
