From a close, loving and strong bond to the notoriously aggressive killer whale’s hatred of his trainer: The shocking details of this tragedy… OCD

Dawn Brancheau died on February 24, 2010, during a performance with the killer whale Tilikum in Orlando. Her death sent shockwaves through the industry and forever changed the wildlife entertainment industry in the United States.

Dawn Brancheau had worked for many years at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. She was a popular trainer, and her performances with the world-famous killer whales brought the park millions of dollars. But on February 24, 2010, Brancheau was killed in a rare and seemingly unprovoked attack by one of her favorite trainees.

Brancheau’s death profoundly changed the way theme parks treat wild marine animals and was the subject of the influential documentary “Blackfish.” The tragic true story of Dawn Brancheau, as portrayed in the film, sparked a revolution.

Early life and career

Brancheau was born and raised in Indiana. She decided at an early age to dedicate her life to killer whales. As the youngest of six children, she first saw Shamu—arguably the most notorious captive killer whale—at the age of ten during a visit with her parents to SeaWorld in Orlando.

“I remember walking down the aisle of the stadium and telling my mom, ‘This is what I want to do,'” Brancheau recounted in 2006. Before pursuing her dream job, she graduated from the University of South Carolina with a double major in psychology and animal behavior. In 1994, she trained otters and sea lions at Six Flags before moving to SeaWorld in 1996. That same year, Brancheau married Scott Brancheau, a SeaWorld stuntman, and began working with the orca whales she so adored.

Soon after, Dawn Brancheau became the face of SeaWorld. Her beautiful image adorned billboards. Brancheau and her trainees were the highlight of the SeaWorld tour, and she was credited with groundbreaking improvements to the orca show.

Collaboration with Tilikum and past incidents

For years, Brancheau regularly performed with killer whales, performing many daredevil stunts with these highly intelligent animals. Although Brancheau was aware of the potential dangers of working with killer whales, she also knew that they do not attack humans in the wild and that attacks on humans in captivity are very rare.

Dawn Brancheau gradually developed a close bond with a killer whale named Tilikum. “He had a great relationship with Brancheau, and she had a great relationship with him. I think Tilikum loved her, and I know she loved him too,” said John Hargrove, head trainer at SeaWorld.

However, Tilikum was not a peaceful killer whale. He had already been involved in two previous fatalities. On February 20, 1991, Keltie Byrne, a 21-year-old swimmer, slipped and fell into the pool with Tilikum and two other killer whales. The three whales drowned Byrne by dragging her around the pool, repeatedly submerging and pulling her down as she tried to escape. Byrne drowned in her desperate attempt to escape the killer whales.

The second death occurred on July 6, 1999, when a 27-year-old visitor named Daniel P. Dukes was found dead on Tilikum’s back in his sleeping tank. An autopsy revealed numerous wounds and scratches on his body, and his genitals had been bitten off. All of these injuries were attributed to Tilikum.

Brancheau and Tilikum had developed a very close and loving relationship.

The fatal attack and its consequences

On February 24, 2010, tragedy struck again. That day, Tilikum and Brancheau appeared on the show “Dine with Shamu” at SeaWorld, where guests enjoyed an outdoor meal while watching killer whale performances.

According to witnesses, Tilikum grabbed Brancheau by the ponytail, pulled her in, and began hitting the trainer underwater in his mouth. However, other witnesses claimed Tilikum pulled her in by the arm or shoulder.

No matter what grabbed Tilikum, the result was the same: The trainer was pulled quickly and violently into the pool and drowned. Even worse, the violent movements of the six-ton whale broke Brancheau’s jaw, dislocated her knee and arms, and fractured her vertebrae and ribs. Investigators also determined that Brancheau’s spinal cord was severed in the attack and her scalp was completely torn from her head. Dawn Brancheau lived to be just 40 years old. She was buried in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

The killer whale Tilikum performs on March 30, 2011, one year after killing trainer Dawn Brancheau.

Since the tragic accident involving Dawn Brancheau, no SeaWorld trainers have entered the same pool as the orca. Immediately after her burial, SeaWorld was forced to comply with a regulatory ban. However, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had tried unsuccessfully for years to force SeaWorld to comply with stricter regulations. In 2013, the documentary “Blackfish,” produced by Magnolia Pictures, was acquired and released by CNN. The film focuses heavily on the death of Dawn Brancheau and also sheds light on the dangerous conditions faced by orcas in captivity. The filmmakers conducted research and explained the psychology and behavior of orcas separated from their families and the ocean in the confined environments of amusement park aquariums.

The film attracted public attention and put pressure on SeaWorld to change its treatment of captive animals used for entertainment. In 2016, SeaWorld announced it would stop breeding killer whales in captivity. Many of its killer whale programs were subsequently suspended or discontinued.

SeaWorld has also pledged to stop accepting wild-captured killer whales and to shift its focus to the care and rehabilitation of the park’s remaining killer whales.

As for Dawn Brancheau, her family wants to focus on her life rather than her tragic death. In 2016, the Brancheau family founded a charity in her name to honor the courageous trainer. They explain that the fund’s mission is “to improve the lives of children and animals in need, inspire others to follow their dreams, and promote the importance of community service.”
