UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered their first significant injury of training camp on Saturday, when outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon left practice on a cart.

Moon was injured during the seven shots period, the first of the team portion of every practice, when he went down while he was rushing the passer.

He was taken from the field at St. Vincent College on a cart. After practice, head coach Mike Tomlin said that he is being evaluated for a calf injury.

The Steelers have plenty of depth at outside linebacker, where Moon has been the fifth man in rotation behind T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and fourth-round rookie Jack Sawyer.

Moon is in his second season with the Steelers after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens in January 2024. He played in 13 games last season and made one start, recording nine tackles. Most of his playing time came on special teams.

With Watt getting the day off on Saturday, and Moon leaving early in practice with an injury, that left plenty of reps for the team’s depth options at outside linebacker, including DeMarvin Leal, Eku Leota and Julius Welschof.

Tomlin said that all of the other injuries suffered during practice on Saturday were heat-related, as the temperatures on the playing surface at Chuck Noll Field reached near the triple digits. That could include safety Quindell Johnson, who also left practice on a cart.

The Steelers did get tight end Jonnu Smith back from his undisclosed injury. Smith had only done light stretching and side work the first two days of training camp, but he took both individual drills and team periods on Saturday.

The team was still without left guard Isaac Seumalo (soft-tissue) and running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson (undisclosed). Tomlin said there’s a chance they could return for the team’s final heat-acclimation practice on Sunday.

In addition to Watt, veterans Cam Heyward and Darius Slay were also given the day off by Tomlin.
