The Trump administration has announced plans to freeze or revoke more than $10 billion in federal funding earmarked for child care subsidies and social services in five Democratic-led states — California, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado. “If the buck stops with me when there’s a problem, then the buck stops with me on our successes too,” Walz said during a recent press conference. “Not a single Republican supported these programs. Not one.”

Walz pointed to Minnesota’s investments in child care, education, and family assistance — policies that have helped the state rank near the top nationally in measures of child well-being and economic stability. Cutting off federal funding, he warned, would not punish state leaders but would instead destabilize working families who rely on affordable child care to remain in the workforce.

California Pushes Back on Fraud Claims

California Governor Gavin Newsom (often referred to colloquially online as “Nuome”) dismissed the administration’s fraud justification as selective and politically motivated.
