The unease deepened after remarks attributed to Billy Long, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Iceland, who reportedly joked that Iceland could become the “52nd state,” with himself as governor. “When you joke repeatedly about annexation, allies stop laughing,” said one European official.

Trump has previously floated similar ideas about Canada, repeatedly referring to it as a potential “51st state,” as well as making aggressive statements about Panama, Venezuela and Cuba. Critics say the accumulation of such rhetoric has reshaped global perceptions of U.S. intentions.

Economic Anxiety at Home

The foreign policy turmoil comes as many Americans face intensifying financial strain. According to recent housing data, foreclosure filings are up roughly 23 to 25 percent year over year.
