Washington / Nuuk — As Donald Trump once again advances expansive claims about America’s role in the world, long-standing U.S. allies are confronting an increasingly uncomfortable question: Is the international, rules-based order that Washington helped build now being undermined by the United States itself?

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has publicly revived a series of ideas that were once dismissed as rhetorical excess or political theater. Among them: “taking back” the Panama Canal, suggesting Canada could become the 51st U.S. state, renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” and renewing his interest in acquiring Greenland, the autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

What has alarmed diplomats and security experts is not merely the rhetoric, but Trump’s assertion that he would not rule out the use of military force to pursue some of these objectives.

Greenland: From Punchline to Diplomatic Flashpoint

Greenland is not a new subject in Trump’s political imagination. In 2019, he floated the idea of “buying” the island, prompting sharp rebukes from Copenhagen and Nuuk. At the time, many analysts treated the proposal as unserious.

This time, however, the context has changed.

At a recent press conference, Trump described Greenland as “essential to U.S. national security and the security of the free world,” citing increased Chinese and Russian activity in Arctic waters. He went further, questioning whether Denmark even has a legitimate legal claim to the territory — a statement that directly contradicts internationally recognized treaties and agreements.

Those remarks quickly spread across American social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), where journalists, scholars, and former defense officials openly debated whether a sitting U.S. president was now challenging the sovereignty of a NATO ally.

“A Disrespectful Image”: Nuuk Pushes Back

Tensions escalated following what appeared to be a symbolic but politically charged incident. Katie Miller, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller, posted an image of Greenland colored entirely in red, white, and blue, resembling the American flag. The caption consisted of a single word: “Soon.”

The post ignited immediate backlash in both the United States and Europe.

Greenland’s premier, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, responded with a firm but measured statement:
“Greenland is not for sale, and our future is not decided by social media posts.”

He emphasized that Greenland is a democratic society with self-government, free elections, and strong institutions, grounded in international law. “The image is disrespectful,” he added. “Relations between nations are built on mutual respect and international law, not on symbolic gestures that disregard our status and our rights.”

A Crucial Distinction: Greenland Is Not Venezuela

While the Trump administration has attempted to justify its aggressive posture toward Venezuela by pointing to the authoritarian nature of Nicolás Maduro’s government, analysts argue that applying similar logic to Greenland is fundamentally untenable.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of a democratic state, a long-standing U.S. ally, and part of the NATO security framework. Any coercive approach — even rhetorical — risks triggering a serious crisis within the transatlantic alliance.

Senator Bernie Sanders sharply criticized the president’s unilateral tendencies, stating:
“The president of the United States does not have the authority to take this country into war on his own. Congress must reassert its constitutional role.”

Europe and NATO Face an Uncomfortable Test

European diplomats, according to reporting from outlets such as Axios and Politico, are increasingly concerned that they may soon be forced to choose between defending core principles of sovereignty and maintaining strategic ties with Washington.

For NATO, the issue is no longer hypothetical: What happens when one member openly questions the territorial legitimacy of another?

A Stress Test for the Global Order

Trump has long used provocative language as a political weapon, but foreign policy experts warn that normalizing expansionist rhetoric risks eroding U.S. credibility as a global leader.

Greenland’s strategic position in the Arctic may indeed place it at the center of 21st-century geopolitical competition. Yet analysts argue that an approach rooted in pressure and threat — rather than diplomacy and respect for international law — could ultimately isolate the United States.

As one former senior State Department official wrote on social media: “You cannot claim to defend the international order while actively undermining it.”

In that sense, Greenland has become more than a hypothetical territorial dispute. It is a symbol of a much larger debate — one that will define America’s role in the world for years to come: Will the United States lead by rules, or by force?
