The timing of the hoax, coinciding with real reports of the floods, made it seem plausible to some, especially as Chan was in Beijing for the premiere of his film The Shadow’s Edge on August 3.
The floods were indeed devastating. In Miyun, 28 people died as over 21 inches of rain fell, turning streets into rivers and sweeping away cars.
