BREAKING: Billy Bob Thornton Blasts ‘Political Soapbox’ Award Speeches, Urges Hollywood to ‘Stick to What It Is’

Los Angeles, Calif. – November 10, 2025 – In a rare and unfiltered rebuke from one of Hollywood’s most respected veterans, Oscar-winning actor, director, and musician Billy Bob Thornton has called out fellow celebrities for transforming award shows into “political soapboxes,” insisting that the glitzy ceremonies should remain platforms for gratitude, not grandstanding.

Speaking exclusively to The Hollywood Chronicle on the red carpet ahead of the 15th Annual Governors Awards Saturday night, Thornton—clad in his signature black suit and bolo tie—did not mince words when asked about the increasingly partisan tone of acceptance speeches at major events like the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmys.

“Listen, I’ve been doing this for over 30 years,” said Thornton, 70, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sling Blade in 1997. “These shows are supposed to be about recognizing artistic achievement. You get up there, you thank your mom, your director, the crew who busted their asses for 18 hours a day in the mud. That’s it. You don’t get a microphone in front of a billion people to push your politics. Stick to what it is.”

The Goliath star’s comments come amid growing fatigue among audiences and industry insiders over the politicization of Hollywood’s biggest nights. A 2024 Variety poll found that 62% of viewers tune out during acceptance speeches perceived as “preachy” or “agenda-driven,” with social media backlash often overshadowing the winners themselves.

Thornton, known for his no-nonsense Arkansas roots and eclectic career—from Bad Santa to Fargo—pointed to his own 1997 Oscar speech as a model of restraint. In under 40 seconds, he thanked his then-wife, the Sling Blade crew, and his home state before walking off to thunderous applause.

“I didn’t solve world hunger in 38 seconds,” he quipped. “I just said thank you to the people who got me there. That’s the job.”

His remarks quickly went viral on X, where #StickToWhatItIs trended nationwide by Sunday morning. Conservative pundits praised Thornton as a “voice of reason,” while progressive activists accused him of tone-policing marginalized voices. One viral reply from a verified actor read: “Easy for a white man to say. Some of us don’t have the luxury of silence.”

Thornton, however, doubled down in a follow-up statement to The Chronicle: “This ain’t about left or right. It’s about timing. You want to change the world? Great. Start a foundation. Make a documentary. But don’t hijack someone else’s moment. The sound guy who’s been on set since 4 a.m. doesn’t need a lecture on climate change when he’s just trying to hear his name called.”

The debate reignited memories of past controversies. In 2017, Meryl Streep’s anti-Trump Golden Globes speech drew both cheers and boycotts. In 2020, Joaquin Phoenix used his Oscar win to decry dairy industry practices, prompting eye-rolls from some and standing ovations from others. Last year, a Best Supporting Actress winner’s 90-second plea for ceasefire in Gaza was met with a mix of applause and awkward silence in the Dolby Theatre.

Industry veterans echoed Thornton’s sentiment. Two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, who worked with Thornton on U Turn, told The Chronicle: “Billy’s right. The stage isn’t a bully pulpit. It’s a thank-you note.”

Even younger stars are taking note. Rising actor and Euphoria breakout Javon Walton, 19, said backstage at the Governors Awards: “I grew up watching Billy Bob. If I ever win anything, I’m keeping it short. Thank my team, thank my family, get off. That’s class.”

But not everyone agrees. Academy Governor Whoopi Goldberg defended impassioned speeches in a View segment Monday morning: “Art is political. Always has been. If you don’t like it, change the channel.”

Thornton, however, remains unmoved. The Landman star—currently filming Taylor Sheridan’s latest Paramount+ series—has long cultivated an outsider persona in Hollywood, living part-time in Arkansas and shunning the coastal elite bubble. His band, The Boxmasters, is set to tour the Midwest next spring, far from the Beverly Hills echo chamber.

“I’m not telling anybody to shut up forever,” Thornton clarified. “I’m saying pick your spots. The Oscars ain’t a TED Talk.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has faced declining ratings for years, declined to comment on Thornton’s remarks. But sources inside the organization say the Governors are quietly discussing speech time limits and content guidelines for the 2026 ceremony—moves that could prove divisive.

As Hollywood barrels toward another awards season, Thornton’s blunt intervention has forced a reckoning. Will stars heed the call for humility, or double down on defiance? One thing is certain: the man who once played a mentally disabled murderer with heartbreaking authenticity has just delivered another unforgettable performance—this time, off-screen.

For now, Billy Bob Thornton is back to work. When asked what he’d say if handed another golden statuette, he grinned: “I’d quote my daddy: ‘Don’t talk too much, son. Just say thanks and sit down.’”
