NATIONWIDE — As Halloween approaches, parents across the country are being warned about the potential dangers lurking in children’s candy bags. Police in Michigan and Florida have discovered candy and snacks disguised as regular candy but containing THC, psychedelic mushrooms and other illegal substances, with some products believed to be fake fentanyl, a powerful drug that can be fatal even in small doses.

Medical experts, like Dr. Carole Lieberman, stress that children are unlikely to be able to distinguish between regular candy and drugged candy. She advises parents to carefully inspect all candy, throw out items of unknown origin and supervise children before they eat them. Signs of poisoning can include changes in heart rate, difficulty breathing, nausea or unusual behavior, and quick action can save a child’s life.

Despite the risks, experts stress that Halloween is still a fun time for families and communities, but vigilance and careful parental supervision are key to keeping the tradition safe.
